Management of Alcohol and other Substance Use Among Adolescents and Young Adults (Transitional Aged Youth)
Description
Substance use disorder (SUD) and related conditions are the nation's number one health problem conferring a massive burden of disease, negative social impact, and prodigious financial cost. This symposium provides an overview of the epidemiology and factors involved in onset and clinical course of SUD, with a concentrated focus on effective treatment approaches for SUD among transitional aged youth (TAY). A parent/patient panel will provide first-hand accounts of treatment service use experiences.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should be able to:
- Identify which developmental stages during the life course confer the highest risk for the onset of substance use disorders (SUD) and why this is the case
- Recognize the relative influence of the biopsychosocial factors that affect risk for SUD onset, severity, and duration.
- Explain the specific aspects of the developmental context in which SUD is likely to occur.
- Recognize the role of pharmacotherapy in the management of Addictions in adolescents and young adults.
- Identify which areas of the brain are implicated in impulsive drive to use drugs and which areas are involved in inhibiting drug use behavior, both of which have been shown to have abnormal activity in those with addictive disorders.
- Describe novel behavioral treatments that target areas of the brain associated with addictive disorders.
- Define the concept of "recovery" within the broader concept of a chronic, relapsing disease.
- Identify 5-7 basicelements of treatment that increase the likelihood of positive treatment outcome.
- Describe 3 evidence based treatment models that have been demonstrated efficacy for youth and families.
